The Melonhead Puppet Pattern
Character: "Javier is a new immigrant to the U.S. He's a bit lost and confused as he and his family were lost during the migration. Now he's on his own to try to find employment and room and bored in the states with his broken English. Always friendly although a little spacey, Javier is taking things slowly now that he's on his own for the first time. And watch out, when those ears go up, he's up to no good!" - Jon
Technical: "This was made from the Melonhead puppet pattern. I found a sale on some nice fleece at a local store and decided to try the project out. It was very simple and lots of fun. There are no deviations from the plans whatsoever. The ears were made out of the same fleece and pink felt for the inside. The nose and eyes are Sculpey clay baked and painted then hot glued onto the fleece itself. Usually the features would be a bit heavy for just the fleece but the foam skull gave the head enough weight to hold the features without a problem. I also used Modge Podge gloss finish on the eyes to give them a wet look. I personally like when eyes catch some of the light, adds some character. Eyes are a HUGE part of the puppet. I tried several different eye patterns and shapes from ping pong balls to small marbles before I finally settled on these. They were big enough to elicit sympathy but still spacey enough to be a bit kooky for the character I was going for." - Jon
